Ya know … when you are doing something that you enjoy doing and you are really good at …
You’re doing it without even thinking about it …
You’re challenged, but you’re not worried or stressed or doubting yourself …
Hours go by without getting distracted …
You are fully present… In the moment… In “the zone”?
Well, turns out when you are in that experience, you are in a state of flow!
Positive psychologists termed “flow state” for the experience of being absorbed by an engaging, enjoyable task, where the attention is completely held by the task.
And, it turns out spending time in a flow state is really good for you! Although there is a lot that is unknown about the flow state and it’s effects on the brain, there does seem to be a strong correlation between increased time in flow state and an increased overall sense of well-being!
Being in flow state is relaxing for the mind and body which allows brain chemicals to be released. These brain chemicals:
increase well-being
increase happiness
increase fulfillment
increase productivity
increase intrinsic motivation
improve creativity
help us regulate our emotions
Those of you who are still working may or may not experience much time in flow at work. It depends a lot on how you relate to your job. And, if you are burnt out, super stressed out, or bored.
Retirement and our next chapter is a great opportunity to expand your time in flow state by exploring our strengths and our passions, doing what we love to do, and creating and learning new things. The possibilities are endless!
